Simone Forti

6 January 2023

Having begun her career as a dancer in the 1950s, Simone Forti is perhaps best known for her trailblazing choreography which challenged traditional approaches to modern and contemporary dance. This exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (15 January–2 April) makes a case for a more expansive understanding of Forti as an artist who moved seamlessly between mediums to push forward the dialogue between visual art and dance. The display spans six decades of her career and includes works on paper, videos and documentation of her performances. The museum will host performances of Forti’s Dance Constructions, the first of which was staged in Yoko Ono’s loft in 1961, with a cast of Los Angeles-based artists and creatives. With an emphasis on Forti’s wide-reaching circle of influence, the exhibition also includes later examples of Forti’s musical collaborations with the likes of the American visual artist and musician, Charlemagne Palestine, and a series of three holograms that were produced with the physicist and artist Lloyd G. Cross. Find out more on MOCA’s website.
