Senior Editor

Apollo is recruiting for a Senior Editor. The ideal candidate will have  experience working at an arts magazine or in arts publishing, and will be willing to take on a wide range of editorial responsibilities. Exceptional written and communication skills are vital, and a knowledge of both the history of art and the contemporary art world is desirable.

Founded in 1925 and published monthly, Apollo is one of the world’s oldest and most respected magazines on the visual arts. In print and online, it covers everything from antiquities to contemporary work, as well as providing in-depth discussion of the latest art news and debates about the art world and the museum and heritage sectors; exclusive interviews with the world’s greatest artists and collectors; expert information on the art market, and reviews and previews of exhibitions worldwide.

Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • In collaboration with the editorial team, commissioning features and reviews for print and online
  • Copy-editing articles for print and online and working with contributors to develop pieces
  • Proof-reading articles in print and online prior to publication, as part of the production process
  • Contributing articles about art and the art and museum worlds for Apollo in both print and online
  • Representing Apollo at press briefings, exhibition openings, and other art world events.

Key skills/knowledge

  • Previous experience of working in an editorial office
  • Previous experience in the fields of arts journalism or publishing
  • Copy- and sub-editing experience for print and online
  • Experienced user of InDesign or a comparable desktop publishing programme
  • Comfortable using a CMS system such as WordPress to upload, edit and lay out articles online
  • A demonstrable interest in art history and contemporary art, and knowledge of the art and museum worlds
  • A working knowledge of social media
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Willingness to take direction and work in close collaboration with the magazine’s editors and writers
  • Able to multi-task and adapt easily to change and changing priorities
  • Some knowledge of image rights and artist’s copyright
  • A foreign language would be desirable
