St George and the Dragon
(late 15th century), Jorge Inglés
Newcomer Mullany offers an expressive panel by Jorge Inglés, an artist of presumably English origin at the forefront of the development of the Hispano-Flemish style in Castile, and the first in the region to employ the Netherlandish technique of painting in oil on panel. This depiction of St George formed part of an ambitious altarpiece commissioned by the Marqués de Santillana, most of the surviving panels of which are on loan to the Prado.
