2016 was quite a year for Helen Marten. Alongside a solo show at the Serpentine, she won both the Turner Prize and the inaugural Hepworth Prize for Sculpture. Her reputation has been growing for some time, however: her first solo show in the UK was at the Chisenhale in 2012, and her work has twice been shown at the Venice Biennale. Marten’s work is notoriously difficult to read; but these strange sculptures and assemblages, often made from everyday materials, are characterised by their playful associative details. Currently writing a novel, Marten is also working towards solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, König Galerie, Berlin, and Castello di Rivoli, Turin.
