Sun Xun has made his name by combining traditional craft techniques – such as ink painting and woodcuts – with energetic stop-motion animated films. His Mythological Time installation, shown at the Guggenheim, New York in 2016, combined animation and murals in a disconcerting amalgamation of folk imagery and visions of industrial history. Born in Fuxin in north-east China and now based in Beijing, Sun has had solo shows around the world, including at the Hammer Museum, LA, the Drawing Center, New York, and the Hayward Gallery, London. One video work, Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined Yet in the Revolution (2011), was shown as part of ‘Ink Art’, the Met’s first contemporary Chinese art exhibition, in 2013.
