Skirting the line between shock and humour, Ping’s neon-hued, retro-inspired digital animations venture into the darkest recesses of the mind – repressed obsessions, unfulfilled desires, slippery morals – while reflecting on wider issues of power, greed and globalisation. In some cases, the artist extends the world of his videos into three dimensions, repurposing found objects to create uncanny, immersive environments. The last two years have brought two major solo shows – ‘Your Silent Neighbor’ at the New Museum in 2021, and ‘Earwax’ at Times Art Center in Berlin. Of the latter, which centred on an unnerving animated video named Crumbling Earwax, he has explained that ‘earwax is like a metaphor of how I think and look at the world. All that’s left out is valuable to me – all the concepts that people don’t pick up or aren’t [usually] interested in.’ Wong Ping started his career in broadcasting before founding the Wong Ping Animation Lab in 2014. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the New Museum, New York, SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah (both 2021), the ICA Miami, the Kunsthalle Basel and Camden Art Centre, London (all 2019).
