The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography

While many museums are shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are now reopening as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture.

Ahead of its planned opening later this year, the new Munchmuseet in Oslo has launched its website, together with a digital exhibition dedicated to Edvard Munch’s experiments with photographic self-portraiture, previously staged in New York and Stockholm and now specially adapted for online viewing. ‘The Experimental Self’ presents some 60 photos and assorted cameras belonging to the artist alongside fragments from his ‘home movies’, shot in 1927 on a Pathé-Baby camera he’d picked up in Paris, and a selection of his more recognisable woodcuts and lithographs. This is just a fraction of the museum’s impressive collection (comprising around 45,000 objects bequeathed by Munch to the city of Oslo) – but a tantalising taste of what to expect when the building finally opens.
