The British artist Rose Wylie takes inspiration from everything from folklore and literature to pop culture and cinema. Her frequently large-scale canvases look a little like comic-strips, with their cartoonish figures and provocative fragments of text. This exhibition at the Stedeliijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Ghent (26 November–30 April 2023), Wylie’s first in Belgium, includes a new series of paintings which demonstrate her long-standing interest in consumer culture. A Handsome Couple (2022), for example, depicts two vacant-looking newlyweds framed by what appears to be a television screen, while Pretty Girl Mask from 2017 borrows advertising jargon – ‘try one’ – to play on ideas of naivety.
