A leading proponent of the Ukrainian avant-garde of the 1920s, Petritsky was a painter, graphic designer, and art theorist who worked as a set designer from 1917, drawing inspiration from the playful, vibrant geometric designs of Alexandra Exter. In 1925 he moved to Kharkov and designed various productions for the State Opera House, not least Puccini’s Turandot. This sheet was a gift of the artist’s son to Dmitry Gorbachev, the co-author of a study of the artist.
