New York
In her absurdist videos and multimedia installations, Rabat-born Meriem Bennani combines global pop culture, including reality TV, fashion, the music industry and the visual culture of her native Morocco; the results are regularly posted on social media, including Instagram where she reaches more than 40,000 followers. Frequently her work incorporates her family; Fardaous Funjab (2015–17), for example, is a mock reality TV show about a hijab designer, played by her mother. The work began as a video series before expanding to include a digital billboard advertising the show that appeared in downtown Brooklyn in 2017 as part of an exhibition called ‘Commercial Break’. Since Bennani’s first museum exhibition, at MoMA PS1 in 2016, she has had solo shows at institutions including the Kitchen (2017) and the Julia Stoschek Collection (2020); a show at Nottingham Contemporary is upcoming (2022).
