34 | Co-founder and Director, Madragoa, Lisbon, Portugal
When Matteo Consonni settled on the idea of opening a gallery in Lisbon with co-founder Gonçalo Jesus, he found himself at the heart of a developing art scene with few local galleries. In 2016, he started with a roster of six artists, including Rodrigo Hernández and Adrián Balseca, with a focus on conceptual art. Madragoa Gallery is named after the popular neighbourhood in the city’s historic centre but has a growing presence on the international scene with appearances at Art Basel, Liste, ARCOmadrid, SP-Arte, Zona Maco and Artissima. Consonni came to the project with five years of experience directing Galleria Franco Noero in Turin, a position he took on soon after graduating with an MFA in curating from Goldsmiths in London.
