Incorporating an impressive range of media, including sound and text, Lubaina Himid’s work is driven by an impetus to uncover hidden histories – often in a satirical vein. This major retrospective at Tate Modern (25 November–3 July 2022) explores Himid’s role in the British Black arts movement of the 1980s to paintings created during lockdown. The artist initially trained in theatre design and the exhibition takes a theatrical approach in its presentation of her paintings, including the figurative works for which she is best known.
