Getty Trust announces $100m world heritage programme | The J. Paul Getty Trust has announced a $100m global initiative to support ancient cultural heritage worldwide. Responding to the threat posed to heritage sites by conflict and climate change, the initiative – titled ‘Ancient Worlds Now: A Future for the Past’ – will be geared towards research, conservation strategies and raising awareness of potential dangers. All four of the Getty’s constituent organisations will be involved in the project, which will begin officially in the summer of 2020.
Second arrest made in connection with Cattelan toilet heist | A second man was arrested yesterday (17 September) in connection with the theft of Maurizio Cattelan’s 18-carat-gold toilet sculpture, America, from Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, after a first arrest was made on the day of the robbery last Saturday. Both men arrested on suspicion of burglary or conspiracy to burgle have since been released under investigation. The sculpture has not yet been found.
Walker Art Center announces new sculpture commission | The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has selected the artist Angela Two Stars to produce a new sculpture for the garden of the museum. Chosen by the Walker in conjunction with a committee made up of Native American curators, artists and cultural figures, the new commission is part of a commitment on the part of the museum to better represent Native American artists and communities, after Sam Durant’s sculpture Scaffold caused offence to members of the Dakota community in 2017.
