With hundreds of exhibitions and events vying for your attention in London during Frieze week, Apollo’s editors pick out the shows they don’t want to miss
‘Shashin: are-bure-boke’ at Michael Hoppen Gallery (until 12 November)
In his first showing at Frieze Masters, Michael Hoppen is bringing photographs by Ishiuchi Miyako, who is perhaps best known for her grainy, black and white representations of post-war Japan and her colour series documenting the personal effects of Frida Kahlo. Ishiuchi is also part of a group show at the gallery itself: ‘SHASHIN: are-bure-boke’ (Photograph: rough, blurred, out of focus), which presents the work of several post-war Japanese photographers, including Masahisa Fukase and Shomei Tomatsu.
‘Oceania’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (Until 10 December)
James Cook set sail for the Pacific in the same year as the Royal Academy was founded. ‘Oceania’ at the RA marks the 250th anniversary of both occasions, making valuable connections between the Enlightenment at home and exploration abroad. It presents the cultures Cook came into contact with through some 200 artefacts from some of the world’s most important ethnographic collections.
Pedro Cabrita Reis – Jimmie Durham – Cildo Meireles at Sprovieri (2 October–23 November)
This group show of works by Pedro Cabrita Reis, Jimmie Durham and Cildo Meireles should throw up some intriguing contrasts and correspondences between three conceptual artists with an interest in found materials and everyday life – and with a sense of irony.
