With his images of Paris, the dogged photographer Eugène Atget left behind a lasting record of a city that was on the brink of vanishing. The Getty’s recent acquisition of more than 200 photographs from a private collection includes examples from all of Atget’s major series, now on display at the Getty Center (until 5 November). Street scenes such as Rue de Chevalier de la Barre (1923) capture the looming presence of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, while the silhouette of the photographer himself can be glimpsed in his images of shop windows such as Avenue des Gobelins (1925).
