Introducing Rakewell, Apollo’s wandering eye on the art world. Look out for regular posts taking a rakish perspective on art and museum stories.
After ice cream and selfies got the ‘museum’ treatment, it was only a matter of time before someone institutionalised the third pillar of hipster Instagram. Yes folks, there is soon to be an entire museum dedicated to that most photogenic of millennial breakfast staples: the avocado.
As reported in Delish magazine, San Diego is soon to be home to a 6,700 sq ft pop-up museum packed with interactive, alligator-pear-themed displays. Operating under the name CADO, the initiative is the brainchild of sisters Anne Buehner and Mary Carr, with backing coming from the California Avocado Commission.
CADO will be housed within 16 verdantly hued shipping containers and contain attractions including ‘textured walls’, purportedly with the exact feel of a perfectly ripe avocado, and a gift shop designed to look like a grocery store. In case you’re wondering, the experience can be yours for a mere $27.
Sniff all you like, but as Rakewell reported last year, avocado art is all the rage; Time magazine has even gone as far as describing the fruit’s flesh as the ‘optimal canvas for culinary artists to make a miniature-sized masterpiece’. Whether or not the museum will showcase an exhibit on the dangers of ‘avocado hand’, however, remains to be seen…
