This week’s competition prize is Turner & the Sea by Christine Riding and Richard Johns (Thames & Hudson, £35)
Published to coincide with a major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in November, this is the first publication to explore the full range of J.M.W. Turner’s lifelong fascination with the sea. Turner & the Sea brings together many of the artist’s most celebrated seascapes, from his transformative Royal Academy paintings of the late 1790s and early 1800s to the compelling and provocative marine subjects he produced in the final years of his life. Furthermore, it examines Turner’s competitive response to the work of his British contemporaries, including John Constable, Augustus Wall Callcott and Richard Parkes Bonington. Turner is regarded as one of the major figures in British and European art, and this magnificently illustrated book examines important but rarely seen works, as well as throwing new light on his well-known seascapes, such as The Fighting ‘Temeraire’, The Wreck of a Transport Ship and The Battle of Trafalgar.
For your chance to win simply answer the following question and submit your details below before midday on 17 January 2014.
What was the subject of Turner’s first oil painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1796?
