This week’s competition prize is John Constable: The Making of a Master, By Mark Evans (V&A Publishing, £30)

John Constable’s paintings have long been celebrated for their remarkable naturalism, and viewed as precursors of Impressionism, Modernism and even photography. Published to accompany a major V&A exhibition, this book presents a new interpretation of Constable’s work, placing his justly vaunted naturalism in the context of his wider practice – in particular his talent for copying, and his extensive print collection. This book shows how the artist’s reverence for Ruisdael, Rubens and Claude was entirely compatible with his revolutionary handling of paint: where others competed with the Old Masters, Constable assimilated their ideas and values to imbue his own naturalistic vision with dynamism.
