Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964) by Andy Warhol sold at Christie’s New York on Monday night for $195m, making it the most expensive work of 20th-century art to be sold at auction, a record previously held by Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O), which sold for $179.4m. The work had previously belonged to the late Thomas and Doris Ammann and the buyer was the dealer Larry Gagosian, reports the Art Newspaper.
Deane Lawson is the winner of this year’s Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Lawson was announced as the winner of the £30,000 prize, for her show ‘Entropy’ at the Kunsthalle Basel, at a ceremony at the Photographer’s Gallery. This is the second major prize won by Lawson in recent years; the Deutsche Börse follows the photographer’s receiving of the Guggenheim Museum’s $100,000 Hugo Boss Prize in 2020.
The Art Fund has announced the shortlist for the annual Museum of the Year award. The shortlist includes the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London, the Museum of Making in Derby, the People’s History Museum in Manchester, The Story Museum in Oxford and Tŷ Pawb (Everyone’s House) in Wrexham. The winner will receive £100,000, with runners-up receiving £14,000 each, and will be announced on the 14 July at the Design Museum in London.
Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology announced in a statement this week, that a team of archaeologists have uncovered the ruins of an Aztec residential dwelling in the Centro neighboorhood of Mexico City. The dwelling, which spans more than 4,300 square feet, is thought to originate from the around 1200–1521 C.E.
