Marisol

By Apollo, 26 September 2025

Over the last two years, a major retrospective of the Pop sculptor Marisol has been touring the United States. The Venezuelan-American artist’s stoic, blocky wooden characters, dressed up for an outing, seated for dinner or gathered at silent parties, have taken up residence in Montreal, Toledo, Buffalo and Dallas. Now they have travelled across the Atlantic for a show organised by the Buffalo AKG (home to Marisol’s archive) with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the Kunsthaus Zürich that features not only the sculptures for which Marisol is best known but also drawings, prints and more (1 October–22 February 2026). The exhibition makes clear that as well as being playful, Marisol’s work pulled no punches when exploring poverty, power relations or the status of immigrants and Native Americans. In other words, it couldn’t be more timely.
