Director, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne
Tony Ellwood has served as director of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne since 2012, during which time the institution has become the most visited in Australia. Ellwood has overseen many significant exhibitions at the museum, including surveys of Degas, Van Gogh and Hockney, as well as the inaugural NGV Triennial of contemporary Australian art. Ellwood began his career as a coordinator of Aboriginal art at Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in Kununurra and has also served as director of Bendigo Art Gallery, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA). He sits on several state and Commonwealth boards and was on the selection committee of the Venice Biennale in 2005 and 2009.
