Independent curator, Nagoya
Shihoko Iida is an independent curator based in Nagoya, Japan. Collaborative methods are at the heart of her approach to curating, which focuses especially on contemporary art in Asia and on the relationship between art institutions and the wider world. Iida served as chief curator of the Aichi Triennale in 2019, reprising the role for this year’s edition of the prestigious international art exhibition, which opened on 30 July and runs until 10 October. Previously, Iida was co-curator of the Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh in 2012, the Aichi Triennale in 2013, and the Sapporo International Art Festival in 2014. From 1998–2009, Iida worked as a curator at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, where she organised a high-profile survey of Wolfgang Tillmans (2004) and an exhibition comparing Japanese and Australian photomedia. Iida has since held positions at the Australian Centre of Asia Pacific Art in the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane (2009–11); in 2011 she was an international fellowship researcher at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. Iida is a member of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) and a committee member for the Sapporo International Art Festival.
