Relationship between Jerwood Foundation and Jerwood Gallery in doubt | The Guardian has reported that the Jerwood Foundation, which sponsors the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, may withdraw funding and take back possession of some 300 works. The foundation’s chairman Alan Grieve, who built the collection for the late pearl dealer John Jerwood, spoke to the Sunday Telegraph about disagreements between the two organisations.
Nigeria asks British Museum to return Lander Stool | The commissioner for Tourist, Arts & Culture in Lagos State, Steve Ayorinde, made a request to the British Museum on Friday that it return the Lander Stool, a woodcarving taken from Nigeria by explorer Richard Lander in 1830. The object is currently in storage, but Lagos State has stated that it intends to display it in the John K. Randle Centre, which has been extensively renovated and will reopen as a heritage space for Yoruba history and culture in the spring. British Museum director Hartwig Fischer stressed that the institution has an ongoing partnership with institutions in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.
Lyn Kienholz (1930–2019) | It has been announced that artists’ advocate Lyn Kienholz died aged 88 at her Hollywood Hills home on 25 January. Kienholz was central to the Southern Californian art scene. In 2002–04 she researched the archives of local artists, museums and collectors for the L.A. History Project, providing the material for the Pacific Standard Time exhibition series, organised in partnership with the Getty Foundation.
