Collector and patron, Beijing
Not content with founding the M WOODS museum in Beijing in 2014 – which brought significant exhibitions of work by international artists such as Andy Warhol to China – the collector and curator Michael Xufu Huang last year spearheaded the creation of another institution in Beijing: the X Museum. This second institution focuses on emerging Chinese contemporary artists; as head of programming, Huang curated the inaugural show – the X Museum Triennial, ‘How Do We Begin?’ – which brought together works by fellow millennials such as Miao Ying, Cui Jie and Jes Fan in a show designed to take the temperature of Chinese art today. One of Huang’s primary collecting interests is new media and post-internet art; his collection includes 150 works by post-internet artists, among them Simon Denny and Amalia Ulman (Huang funded the latter’s display at the Berlin Biennale in 2016). He sits on the board of directors of the New Museum in New York.
