Joyce Pensato (1941–2019) | The American artist Joyce Pensato has died at the age of 77. Pensato, who was born in Brooklyn and lived there for most of her life, is best known for her large-scale, expressive paintings of cartoon characters rendered in black and white. She had her first institutional survey at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2013; her works can be found in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Hammer Museum, among others.
Hauser & Wirth to open arts centre in Menorca | Hauser & Wirth yesterday announced plans to open a new arts centre in Menorca. The centre will be housed in a group of outbuildings belonging to a former naval hospital built in the 18th-century, which the gallery is working together with local organisations to restore.
World Monuments Fund restores eastern half of Phnom Bakheng temple | The World Monuments Fund has restored the eastern half of the Phnom Bakheng temple, one of the oldest in the Angkor archaeological park in Cambodia. The completion of the works cost $4.8m and marks a milestone in the ongoing conservation project, which began in 2008 and aims to protect the temple from the destabilising effects of changing water flows in the region. The WMF estimates that that the western half could take a further eight years to complete.
