Iwona Blazwick has been director of the Whitechapel Gallery, London, since 2001, overseeing its successful expansion in 2009 and curating many exhibitions; recent projects include ‘Mark Dion: Theatre of the Natural World’, a major Thomas Ruff retrospective and an exploration of abstract art after Malevich. She is well known as a champion of emerging artists: in 1991, while a curator at the ICA, she put on Damien Hirst’s first solo show in a public institution. Prior to joining the Whitechapel Gallery, Blazwick was instrumental in the development of Tate Modern, as director of exhibitions and displays. She was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to art.
